In a recent development, Cricket Australia have announced their Playing XII for the fourth Ashes Test on Boxing Day. Significantly, Steve Smith will make a return after his inner ear issue ruled him out of the third Test.

As the team announced the playing squad on Christmas morning, the bench is set to an all-seam attack for the MCG clash, though their final bowling combination remains undecided.

Smith confirmed a twelve-man squad, with bowlers Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson eyeing for two available spots. Significantly, the decision hinges on a final inspection of a green-tinged pitch, meaning a home Test for spinner Todd Murphy is out of the way.

Smith’s return will make him resume the captaincy in Pat Cummins's absence, with Usman Khawaja retaining his place after solid contributions in Adelaide. This though, omits Josh Inglis from the side.

Smith said selectors want another look at a "quite furry" MCG surface tomorrow morning before settling on the final makeup of their pace attack.

"It's exciting to see Richardson back into the fold. We've seen when he's had the opportunity at this level, he's been outstanding," Smith said on Richardson's prospects.

The pitch, with 10mm of grass, is expected to offer significant seam movement, especially under cold and overcast conditions forecast for the first day. Smith clarified that the selection of four quicks was a conditions-based decision, not a reflection on Murphy's ability.

"I think if Nathan (Lyon) was (available), we'd probably still be having the same conversation as well, so it's certainly nothing to do with Todd's skill," Smith added.

Khawaja at 5, Cameron Green at 7

Khawaja will shift to number five in the batting order to accommodate Steve Smith's return, marking his first time in that position since his celebrated Ashes comeback four years ago.

The successful opening partnership of Travis Head and Jake Weatherald remains intact, while Alex Carey continues at six following his strong showing in Adelaide, with Cameron Green at seven.
