The Wankhede Stadium is set to immortalize Rohit Sharma’s legacy with the inauguration of the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ on Friday, May 16, a day before the resumption of the suspended IPL 2025 season. Originally slated for May 13, the ceremony was delayed due to geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

Notably, the Mumbai Indians squad, including key players and support staff, were spotted at the venue ahead of the event, celebrating their iconic captain’s contributions to cricket.

Mumbai Indians Squad's Heart-warming Presence At Wankhede

A Times Of India editor, Gaurav Gupta, shared glimpses of the squad’s presence, captioning, “Entire @mipaltan team & support staff at the inauguration of the @ImRo45 stand at Wankhede. Superb gesture by Mumbai Indians.” 

Stars like Tilak Varma, Karan Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav were seen seated prominently, underscoring the franchise’s unity.

Rohit's Massive Presence In IPL

Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from Test cricket, has been a cornerstone for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, amassing 300 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 152.28.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the honour during its Annual General Meeting last month, recognizing his stellar leadership and achievements, including T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy triumphs. 

With tensions easing, the revamped ceremony will now kickstart the league’s return, as MI prepares to face Delhi Capitals on May 21. Meanwhile, Rohit, despite his Test retirement, remains pivotal to MI’s campaign. 

The stand’s naming not only celebrates his on-field heroics but also his deep ties to Mumbai cricket. As the IPL relaunches in Bengaluru on May 17, the ceremony adds emotional weight to MI’s quest for a sixth title, blending past glory with future ambitions.
