In a significant development, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced formidable squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I Tri-Series in Pakistan. After a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, the Lankans will also play a T20I tri-series featuring Zimbabwe, apart from the hosts. Matheesha Pathirana is one of Sri Lanka's key players to miss out on selection, while veteran batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa has received a recall.
Pathirana, Madushanka ruled out; Wellalage dropped
Matheesha Pathirana will miss the ODI series as well as the tri-nation T20I tournament due to an upper respiratory tract infection, revealed Cricbuzz. The CSK speedster has been replaced by Asitha Fernando.
On the other hand, Dilshan Madushanka hasn't recovered from a knee injury and hence has been excluded from both squads. Eshan Malinga, who played in the IPL 2025 for SRH, comes in as his replacement.
Promising all-rounder Dunith Wellalage has been dropped from both squads following a string of ordinary outings in the Asia Cup, where Sri Lanka suffered an embarrassing Super Four elimination.
Nuwanidu Fernando, Nishan Madushka and Milan Rathnayake have also been ignored for ODIs, with Lahiru Udara, Kamil Mishara, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan returning to the team. Chamika Karunaratne and Binura Fernando have been dropped from the shortest format, while Sri Lanka have recalled Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Janith Liyanage and Dushan Hemantha to their T20I squad for the tri-series.
Charith Asalanka will lead Sri Lanka in both ODI and T20Is, with Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera and Dasun Shanaka forming their core.
