After being reduced to 2 for 3, India were in deep trouble early on in their innings, but a defining partnership between KL Rahul and Virat Kohli took India past the finish line without much hassle in their first game of World Cup 2023. Rahul, who came into bat at number five, was at the crease by the end of the second over, which was kind of surprising for the right-hander.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Rahul, who played a 97* run knock in India's six-wicket victory, expressed shock that he had to walk in that early as he wanted to have a shower and some break after fielding for 50 overs. However, some lethal bowling from the Aussie pacers meant that he had a significant role to play in the game.

"Quite honestly, not a lot of conversation, I thought I’d get a good shower and get a break. I was just trying to get my breath back. Virat said there’s a bit in the wicket, so play like Test cricket for a while. There was a bit of help for the pacers with the new ball, and then the spinners also."

Mentioning the help of dew, the 31-year-old asserted that the ball started to come nicely onto the bat, which made their jobs a lot easier, but as far as the pitch was concerned, it was a balanced wicket supporting both batters and bowlers.

"In the last 15-20 overs, dew played a part, and that helped quite a bit. The ball also skidded on better. However, it was a bit two-paced, it wasn’t the easiest of wickets to bat on, and it wasn’t flat as well. It was a good cricket wicket, bit for the batters and the bowlers. That’s what you get in the south of India, especially Chennai."

Rahul finished the game with a six in the end as he ended his innings three short of the century, however, the Karnataka batter revealed that he had plans on how to reach the three-figure milestone, but eventually, they didn't fall in place.

"I hit it too well, I just calculated how to get to a 100 in the end. The only way for 4 and a six, but no qualms on not getting to that hundred."

After this fighting victory, KL Rahul and India will march onto the play against the Afghanistan side in Delhi on 11th October, whereas Australia would want to get their campaign on track when they face South Africa on 12th October.
