Ex-Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has come forward to assist the citizens of Punjab, who are undergoing one of the worst flood situations in the recent past. In an emotional video uploaded on Instagram, Dhawan asked people to unite and provide relief to those who have been affected.

Punjab is struggling with one of the worst flood disasters in decades. Heavy rains during the monsoon season and releases from dams have caused havoc across the state.

More than 1,400 villages have been inundated as of early September 2025, displacing millions of residents and resulting in substantial agricultural losses.

Shikhar Dhawan Joins Flood Relief Efforts In Punjab

In a recent social media appeal, veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan called for help. He said the state of Punjab needs our strength, compassion and support, and even a small help can make a big difference.

Dhawan's message went viral, with a lot of support from fans, fellow cricketers, and celebrities, alike. His appeal for unity at this time was when thousands in Punjab were left homeless, homes, crops, and livelihoods destroyed by catastrophic flooding.

Alongside his personal message, Dhawan’s NGO, the Shikhar Dhawan Foundation, has been actively involved in providing on-ground help. The foundation is in the affected regions and assisting families with food, shelter, and essentials.

According to a press release, their goal is to provide both immediate relief and long-term support to those trying to rebuild their lives.

PM Modi Steps In To Save Punjab

As a response to the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conducted a review meeting with senior officials and declared a financial package of ₹1,600 crore for Punjab.

This is in addition to the ₹12,000 crore already given to the state earlier. The Centre will also release the next part of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and boost support through the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

PM Modi also visited Gurdaspur, one of the worst-hit regions, and met with rescue teams from the NDRF and SDRF, thanking them for their efforts.
