Massive floods have struck Punjab, leaving 29 people dead and affecting more than 2.65 lakh residents. Heavy rains have drowned villages, damaged crops, and forced thousands of families to leave their homes.
Out of Punjab’s 23 districts, 12, including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar, have been badly hit. The state received over 250 mm of rain in August alone, the highest in 25 years and 74% more than usual. Rivers like the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi have overflowed, washing away homes and farmland. In some areas, the Ravi grew to more than ten times its normal size.
As of September 1, more than 1,300 villages remain underwater. Over 6,500 people have been shifted to 122 relief camps set up by the state.
Shubman Gill ‘Heartbroken’ As Punjab Hit By Worst Floods In Years
Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, who belongs to Punjab, shared his grief on social media. Calling the situation “heartbreaking,” he wrote:
"Heartbroken to see my Punjab devastated by floods. Punjab will always be stronger than any adversity, and we'll rise up from this. My prayers are with all affected families. Standing strong with my people 🙏"
Although Gill is currently in Bengaluru training at the cricket board’s Centre of Excellence, he has shown solidarity with those suffering back home. The young batter has recently cleared his fitness test and is set to play in the Asia Cup 2025, beginning September 9 in the UAE.
The 25-year-old has also been named vice-captain of the Indian side led by Suryakumar Yadav, marking his return to the format after more than a year.
Meanwhile, team India is scheduled to leave for Dubai on September 4, with players traveling separately from their home cities, and practice sessions will begin from September 5.
