Single Ball To Return In ODIs As ICC Confirms New Playing Rules In June

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it will introduce new playing conditions in international cricket starting next month. One of the biggest changes is the return of a single ball in ODIs, a move aimed at balancing the game between bat and ball.

Currently, ODIs are played with two new balls, one from each end. However, starting in July, the rules will change, according to Cricbuzz.

For the first 34 overs, two balls will be used like before, but from the 35th over onwards, only one of the two balls will be chosen by the fielding team and used for the rest of the innings. If the match is shortened to 25 overs or less before it begins, only one new ball will be used for the entire innings.

ICC To Amend Concussion Rule

Not only that, the ICC has also made changes to the concussion substitution rule. Teams must now identify 5 possible replacements prior to the start of any match.

These should include one wicketkeeper, one batter, one fast bowler, one spinner, and one all-rounder.  If one of these replacements also gets injured due to concussion, the match referee will have the power to allow a replacement from outside the named five, following existing like-for-like rules.

Changes are also coming to rules regarding boundary catches and the Decision Review System (DRS), but more details on those will be shared soon.

These new rules will not apply to the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa on June 11 at Lord’s. However, they will be used in the next WTC cycle, starting with Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh on June 17 in Galle. White-ball changes will be implemented from the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh ODI on July 2 and the T20I on July 10.
