Zimbabwean cricket star Sikandar Raza has filed an official complaint with the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA), alleging that he was subjected to racial abuse during a Vigne Cup match on June 1. The incident reportedly occurred at the Old Hararians Sports Club, where Raza was playing for Old Hararians against Rainbow Cricket Club.
Raza Demands Full Investigation Into The Incident
According to the report by ESPNcricinfo, Raza stated that he was accused and racially derogatory remarks were made as Raza was walking off the field after his innings. The remarks, which have not been publicly disclosed in full, allegedly took place in front of players and spectators, prompting immediate concern from the veteran cricketer.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Raza said, “If found guilty, an example should be made out of him so that stuff like this never happens again not to this generation and not to the next,”.
Responding to the matter, HMCA chairperson Tafadzwa Madoro said:
"We received a report of racial abuse that our T20 captain [Raza] suffered, last week. We are in the process of investigating. Blessing Mafuwa will attend a hearing this coming Tuesday. He will answer charges from the report. In the interim, he is suspended from all activities in the HMCA. We don't take racism allegations lightly. We don't condone any racial abuse in HMCA. We will want to investigate this as quickly as possible." HMCA chairperson Tafadzwa Madoro said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
It is important to mention that Raza's decision to bring the matter to light is being seen as a bold step in combating racism within the sport.
Raza's Dominant Performance In The Match
The match itself saw Sikandar Raza deliver a standout performance. Batting for Old Hararians, he scored a commanding 78 runs off 56 balls, anchoring his team’s innings as they posted 402 runs in their 50 overs. Rainbow Cricket Club, in response, managed 225 for eight in 39 overs, falling short by a massive 142 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
