As per latest reports, India's vice-captain Shubman Gill is expected to make his ODI captaincy debut in their upcoming final group stage match against Mitchell Santner's New Zealand. Gill, who has previously led the Men in Blue in the shortest format of the game, could potentially take charge of the team in the high-octane clash of the Champions Trophy on Sunday.

Injured Rohit To Miss; Gill To Step In?

India's regular skipper, Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury during the game against Pakistan but had brushed aside any concerns during the post-match presentation. However, a report by Times Of India revealed that Rohit Sharma missed the net practice on Wednesday as he was not seen participating with the rest of the squad who participated in warm-ups like football and running at the ICC Academy. His restricted movements has led to raising eyebrows over a possible injury and him missing the match against New Zealand.

However, the latest report by The Indian Express and quoted by Inside Sports, Gill can make his captaincy debut in ODIs since team India would be keen on focusing on Rohit's fitness, and since India have already qualified for the semis, the match against Kiwis is one that he can afford to miss.

It must be noted that Shubman Gill missed practice on Wednesday as he was unwell – returned to the nets on Thursday and spent a long time batting in the nets. The 25-year-old, looks to be in raging form, as after only two encounters he has already accumulated 147 runs.

KL Rahul To Open With Gill, Pant In

If at all these reports hold any substance to them, India's wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant could make his way into the playing XI. The 27-year-old is yet to play a match in the Champions Trophy and with Rohit possibly resting, this would be a good opportunity for the dynamic player to be a part of India's line-up. Moreover, KL Rahul could bat in the top-order i.e open alongside Shubman Gill.
