Indian speed demon Mohammed Shami has found a new home, in Indian Premier League (IPL) that is, as he is set to turn up for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise next year in 2026. The fast bowler was roped in by the LSG following his one-year stint with the SRH, and the move was officially completed on November 15.
As Mohammed Shami braces himself up to play for a new franchise, here is a look at five of his best bowling performances in the IPL so far.
5. 3-21 vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2021
Mohammed Shami wrecked Rajasthan Royals’ middle and lower-order with a pacey three-fer in match 32 of the IPL 2021 season at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. After going wicketless but economical with the new ball, Shami was called back by his Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul to bowl his remaining two overs at the death.
The speedster responded with the wickets of Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia and Chris Morris in quick succession as his three-wicket burst reduced the Royals from 166-4 to 185 all out. Mohammed Shami himself claimed impressive figures of 3-21 in the high-scoring innings.
4. 3-21 vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2019
Mohammed Shami bowled his heart out for Punjab Kings in their high-octane IPL 2019 match against hosts Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Defending 198 after a classy KL Rahul century, Shami knocked over Mumbai opener Siddhesh Lad with a peach before getting rid of brothers Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya in the 16th over.
Unfortunately, his deadly spell was largely overshadowed by Kieron Pollard’s thunderous 31-ball 83 after Mumbai Indians pulled off a last-ball win. Nonetheless, in a game where nearly 400 runs were scored in 40 overs, Mohammed Shami’s spell of 3-21 in four overs marked the best by a landslide in either inning.
3. 3-15 vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2020
Mohammed Shami jolted Delhi Capitals’ top-order with the new ball in the second match of the IPL 2020 season in Dubai. The speedster dismissed Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw and number three Shimron Hetmyer both in the fourth over, and also deceived their well-set captain Shreyas Iyer with a slower one later in the innings to seize figures of 3-15 from his four overs. Unfortunately for Shami, Marcus Stoinis bludgeoned 53 off just 21 balls to push Capitals to 157-8, before Punjab Kings fumbled the chase in the final over and lost the match in a tie-breaker.
2. 4-21 vs SRH, IPL 2023
Mohammed Shami picked up just two four-wicket hauls in his decade-long IPL career, and collected both of them in the space of just two weeks. The second of those four-fers occurred in match 62 of the IPL 2023 season against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Defending 189, Shami struck once in each of his first three overs of the innings for Gujarat Titans to put Sunrisers on the mat at 29-4.
The legendary fast bowler also scalped Heinrich Klaasen at the death to claim figures of 4-21 in his four overs as hosts Gujarat clinched a comprehensive 34-run win.
1. 4-11 vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2023
Mohammed Shami ravaged Delhi Capitals with a stormy four-wicket haul in match 44 of the IPL 2023 season at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The speedster gave away just 11 runs from his four overs, and picked up the wickets of Phil Salt, Rilee Rossouw, Manish Pandey and Priyam Garg to restrict the Capitals to just 130-8 in 20 overs.
Even though Gujarat Titans lost the match by five runs in the end, Mohammed Shami bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his electrifying spell.
