The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently confirmed Shubman Gill's exclusion from India's squad for the second Test against South Africa. The Men in Blue is set to witness Rishabh Pant as the 38th Test captain.

However, the concern lingers over what exactly happened to the 26-year-old Shubman Gill that has made him unavailable for the upcoming Guwahati Test.

What happened to Shubman Gill in the first Test?

Shubman Gill has been ruled out ahead of India's second Test against the Proteas. The statement released by the BCCI revealed that the Indian captain is not fully recovered to feature in the 2nd Test.

On 15th November, Gill had suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa. Playing only four balls, the batter was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day's play.

As per the BCCI, he was kept under observation and discharged the next day.

"Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025," the BCCI further communicated.

A couple of days later, on 21st November, the apex body of cricket in India confirmed that he will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury, missing the next Test.

The neck spasm isn't the first instance when Gill has dealt a significant blow on the field. The batter is relatively injury-prone and has a history of lingering concerns.

After scoring an impactful 84 runs off 50 balls and playing a key role in taking Gujarat Titans’ total to 209/4 in 20 overs, Gill stayed out of the ground for the rest of the game. Speaking to Murali Kartik after the match, he revealed the reason behind his absence during the run chase.

“I was experiencing back spasms, and the physio told me that he didn’t want to take a chance. We have a game coming up in a few days, so I was told to rest,” Shubman Gill said.

Thumb injury before IND vs PAK, Asia Cup 2025

In India's opening game against the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Cup 2025, Shubman Gill was sidelined for the rest of the game after a 9-ball 20-run knock. Apart from the that, according to reports, he appeared in visible pain even during the practice ahead of India's game against arch-rivals Pakistan. Fortunately, the opener recovered just before the game and appeared in Blue.

Returning to the present, India is set to play the second Test of the 2-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. With Shubman Gill's absence, it will be interesting to see who will come in to bat at the number 4 position for the Men in Blue.
