In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Shubman Gill won't participate in the upcoming second Test between India and South Africa due to neck injury. Swashbuckling keeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been announced as the Indian captain for the decider, which will be played at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.

BCCI names Pant as Test captain with Gill missing Guwahati clash

For the unversed, Shubman Gill complained of serious pain in his neck after facing just three deliveries in the first Test at Eden Gardens. The stylish batter, who opened his account with a glorious boundary, was immediately attended by the team India physio before leaving the field with discomfort.

Later, Gill was admitted to a hospital and was under medical supervision. Although he was discharged from the hospital a few days later and travelled to Guwahati with his teammates, the BCCI revealed that Gill failed to receive fitness clearance to participate in the second Test.

"Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati. Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on 19th November, 2025. Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury. Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill's absence," the BCCI said in its official press release.

Gill's injury is a massive setback for India, considering how prolific he has been in Test cricket this year. Nevertheless, his unavailability gives Rishabh Pant a massive opportunity to prove his leadership credentials and help India avoid a potential home series defeat with shrewd tactics.
