Team India will enter a new era in Test cricket this year as Shubman Gill has been named captain for the upcoming 5-Test tour to England. Gill will succeed Rohit Sharma, who retired from the red-ball format earlier this month.

India has a prestigious history of producing legendary Test captains who have led the team with excellence over many decades.

From Lala Amarnath in the early days to an era of aggressive and tactical leadership under Virat Kohli, their legacy represents the evolution of Indian Test captains. Each and every skipper brought his unique style, plus points, and influence to the team.

As Shubman Gill prepares to embrace his new role for the forthcoming England series, he joins an elite group of players who have been trusted to lead the national side in the longest format of the game.

Why Was Shubman Gill Chosen As India’s New Test Captain?

In a big shake-up before the new WTC cycle, the BCCI has announced Shubman Gill as the new Test captain for India, replacing Rohit Sharma. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed the decision was made after extensive discussions and feedback from the dressing room. While Gill has no prior red-ball captaincy experience, Agarkar stated the choice was made with a long-term vision in mind, not just for the England series but for India's Test future.
