India unveiled the squad for the upcoming Test tour to England on May 24 through a press conference. Shubman Gill was named captain, whereas Rishabh Pant was appointed as his deputy, but fans had their doubts over the balance of the squad.
A new era of Indian Test cricket will be on display in June as young guns will take on England in a 5-game tour. BCCI announced its squad on May 24 and formally appointed Gill as Rohit’s successor.
With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the format, a lot of new faces were seen in the squad, but a few snubs also caught the fans’ attention.
Fans Raise Doubt On India’s Test Squad For England Tour
A notable snub was Shreyas Iyer. Despite consistent performance in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments, BCCI went with Karun Nair and Abhimanyu Easwaran.
Moreover, a few fans also raised objections to Shubman Gill’s selection as captain. They pointed out that on India’s last tour to Australia, Gill was dropped for poor performance, and just months later, he is taking over the leadership reins over Rishabh Pant.
"Rishabh Pant fights like a warrior, averages 43+ in Tests, and wins matches for India. Shubman Gill? A big-match choker who can’t handle pressure and barely averages 35 but still being pushed as Test captain? THIS ISN’T MERIT. THIS IS FAVORITISM." - @Niiki099
"Ladies and Gentlemen...BCCI presents to you the weakest test team squad you've ever seen play for India in your lifetime. I still could not believe the fact that they made Shubhman Gill Captain of the Test Team. If Boom wasn't available then Pant should've been the captain." - @United_Indi7
"452 runs at an average of 90.40 with 2 centuries, yet Shreyas Iyer is ignored for the Test team. Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir’s favouritism and insecurity are killing merit. I wish Shreyas had a PR team like Shubman Gill. He truly deserves better." - @A_se_Ankit
"Imagine Selecting even Karun Nair but Not Shreyas Iyer. BCCI FOR YOU!" - @OhLookItsLaksh
"Shubman Gill was dropped in Brisbane against Australia. One Test match later he is made the Captain of the Team." - @academy_dinda
Mohammed Shami and Sarfaraz Khan also missed out due to injury concerns. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah was ignored for the leadership role due to workload management. He is coming off a back injury and is unlikely to be available for all 5 Tests.
Arshdeep Singh has received his much-awaited call-up whereas Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav will make their comeback to the Test side.
