Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury [Source: AFP]
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given a big update on Indian captain Shubman Gill’s injury. Despite concerns, the board has confirmed that Gill will travel with the Indian team to Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa, which begins on November 22.
Gill’s injury had raised serious doubts about his availability. During Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens, the Indian skipper hurt his neck while trying to play a sweep shot. Gill immediately fell to the ground in pain, clutching his neck, and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
Later, the 26-year-old batter was taken to the hospital for scans and treatment. Fortunately, he was discharged the next day, but the injury was still worrying. Because of the neck issue, Gill could not come out to bat in India’s second innings. His absence turned out to be costly as India collapsed and lost the match by 30 runs, giving South Africa a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Over the next couple of days, several reports suggested that Gill had been advised not to fly because of the neck injury, which created confusion about whether he would join the team for the next match.
BCCI issues official statement on Shubman Gill's injury
However, the BCCI ended all speculation with an official statement on their social media platform, X.
"Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025."
Due to the uncertainty around their captain’s fitness, the Indian team has also added Nitish Kumar Reddy back to the squad. Reddy had been released earlier to play for India A, where he performed decently in the unofficial ODIs.
With Gill’s participation still unclear, Reddy’s inclusion gives India an extra option in both batting and fast-bowling.
