Nitish Kumar Reddy called back in squad [Source: @SUNRISERSU/X.com]
Nitish Kumar Reddy is all set to re-join India's Test squad for the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati. Reddy, who was released ahead of the Eden Gardens Test to play India A games against South Africa, might be recalled effectively by the Indian think tank, as reported by TOI. The hosts are also currently concerned by skipper Shubman Gill's potential exclusion.
India to bring in Reddy to cope with Gill's injury
Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck cramp while playing a sweep shot on day two of the Eden Gardens Test, was carried off the field immediately, and the BCCI stated that he is under medical observation.
Recent visuals of Shubman Gill wearing a cervical collar have also gone viral, indicating that the star batter might not recover in time.
Gill’s injury is yet to recover, and with the next Test in Guwahati looming within four days, India might decide to call back Nitish Kumar Reddy to strengthen the playing XI with all-rounder strength.
Gautam Gambhir and Co. initially thought the all-rounder needed more time to settle in with the bat as well as get more bowling volume by playing the India-A fixtures against South Africa.
However, as the report claims, Gill's injury has prompted the hosts to prepone his rejoining. So, Reddy will likely join the Indian team ahead of their training session on November 18 and miss the final One-Day against South Africa-A.
Reddy could strengthen India's arsenal
Reddy’s inclusion in the playing XI might be a smart choice since it will allow the hosts to keep up with the left-right combination and smooth out the match-ups with Proteas in favour of India.
Though Nitish Kumar Reddy has not been announced as an official replacement for Shubman Gill, Reddy’s batting firepower in the middle order or lower middle order will be valuable given the collapse India saw in the first Test.
As of Gill’s replacement, Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan are on the bench, with the latter also being spotted doing some drills during the innings break at Eden Gardens.
