In a significant development, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is likely to run from January 7 to February 3, and the BCCI is preparing to stage the tournament’s fourth edition.
Although the final confirmation has not yet been issued, reports indicate that the board has almost finalised Mumbai and Baroda as the host cities.
WPL opening match to take place in Navi Mumbai
Moreover, the opening match is expected to take place at the DY Patil Stadium, a venue praised by several Indian players for its lively atmosphere. If all arrangements proceed smoothly, the latter half of the competition, along with the final, will shift to the Kotambi Stadium in Baroda.
According to Cricbuzz, the Baroda leg will most likely begin around January 16, considering the city is set to host a men’s ODI between India and New Zealand on January 11. While the BCCI has not formally updated the franchise owners, discussions about the venues are already underway informally.
Furthermore, teams are expected to receive official communication during the WPL auction in New Delhi on November 27.
Notably four cities, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Baroda, and Mumbai, were in contention, since they served as hosts during the previous season of the WPL. However, Mumbai and Baroda appear to have secured the nod this time.
Although the exact tournament window has not been publicly confirmed, multiple sources suggest that the league will indeed occupy the January 7 to February 3 slot.
Notably, the last season, the WPL was held in February and March; nevertheless, the shift to January seems intentional. One reason is that the men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for early February in India and Sri Lanka, would otherwise create a scheduling clash.
In addition, several cricket boards have agreed that January could become the permanent WPL window, ensuring that the league does not compete with other tournaments or the ICC’s Future Tours Programme.
Meanwhile, anticipation is building as the WPL 2026 mega auction is set for November 27 in New Delhi, following the recent release of the retention list.
