Shubman Gill pumped out 74 runs at the top for India in their scintillating five-wicket win over Australia in the first ODI of their three-match series. The cricketer formed a 142-run stand with new opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad, and laid out a concrete foundation for a clinical win for his side within the first half of the run-chase itself.

Gill registered his ninth ODI fifty through the course of his knock, and usurped all-time great Sachin Tendulkar for a rare record in 50-overs internationals for India.

Gill goes past Tendulkar, Dhawan for a rare record

Shubman Gill made his international debut with a series in New Zealand back in January 2019. To date, the cricketer has featured in 34 ODI matches for Team India, and has tendered his services as an opener in 30 of them.

His latest match-winning effort against Australia in Mohali marked his 14th fifty-plus score in the format. Remarkably, he notched up 13 of them while facing the new-ball for India.

By registering 13 fifty-plus ODI scores in his first 30 innings as an opener, Shubman Gill has surpassed batting great Sachin Tendulkar (12) for a rare Indian record. Team India discard Shikhar Dhawan and current skipper Rohit Sharma are the next best Indian openers on the list with 10 fifty-plus scores each to their credit after their initial 30 innings.
