On Saturday, November 23, the 17th edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy went underway. 38 teams are participating in the prestigious T20 event organised by the BCCI.
It was a crucial day for several Indian players as the IPL 2025 mega auction will take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. On the eve of the mega-event, several players, who will headline the auction and will go under the hammer performed well, while a few also flopped, risking to go unsold in the auction.
This article will shed light on how the auction stars fared in the first round of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024.
Hits
Shreyas Iyer
Iyer, who was released by KKR, despite leading them to their third title in IPL 2024, shone for Mumbai as he smashed a quick-fire century against Goa.
Notably, Iyer played a 130-run knock and registered the sixth-highest individual run in SMAT history.
Yuzvendra Chahal
Chahal, who failed to be a part of Rajasthan Royals' retention list, shone for Haryana as he took a four-wicket haul. Playing against Manipur, Chahal registered the figures of 4/9.
Baba Indrajith
Baba, who has registered himself for a base price of 30 lakhs, shone for Tamil Nadu in their match against Tripura and scored a quickfire 78 (39), which featured five fours and five sixes. He also opened the innings, which is a plus for him going into the auction.
Flops
Mohammed Shami
Shami, who missed IPL 2024 with heel injury and only made a return to competitive cricket recently for Bengal in Ranji Trophy, failed to replicate his red-ball performance in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as he conceded 46 runs against Punjab.
He took a wicket, but looked a pale shadow of his earlier version, particularly the one who took the most wickets in IPL 2023.
Angrish Raghuvanshi
Raghuvanshi rose to the scenes in IPL 2024 when he took the cricketing world by storm with his class. He was expected to be retained by KKR as an uncapped star, but he will enter the auction.
However, he had a failed outing against Goa and amassed just 6 (4), which featured a solitary four.
Ajinkya Rahane
Rahane too is under the scanner as the India batter has registered himself at a base price of 2 crores but scored a run-a-ball 13 against Goa.
Arjun Tendulkar
Arjun too had a poor outing against Mumbai as he conceded 48 runs in four overs without any wickets at the Gymkhana Club in Hyderabad.
Shardul Thakur
Talking about leaking runs, Shardul, who is currently out of the Indian scheme of things, gave away 43 runs and it led to Goa putting 224 runs on the board.
Rahul Tripathi
Tripathi, another bright Indian prospect, looking to fetch big bucks at the auction, failed to lead Maharashtra by example and scored just 5 (6) against Nagaland.
