Shreyas Iyer revealed Team India stands "heartbroken" following the disappointing loss in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday (November 19) against Australia.

Failing to cross the final hurdle at an ICC event once again, the Indian middle-order gem said his team will take time to overcome the sombre and despair of the loss to the Aussies.

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the painstaking result at the Motera Stadium, Iyer pressed home the bitter feeling experienced by players part of the changing room and wrote it would take time to sink in.

While grateful for a spectacular maiden World Cup in Indian colours, Iyer felt it would take time for him and the rest of the players part of the Rohit Sharma-led outfit to put the setback behind them, especially after having dismantled oppositions in the previous ten matches but failing to cross the last hurdle.

The defeat would've been personally tough to digest for the Mumbaikar. Even though he was out for a measly score of 4 off 3 deliveries after nicking a beautiful outswinger from Pat Cummins in the final, Iyer finished his first men's 50-over World Cup with a whopping 530 runs in 11 innings and two centuries, including a memorable 105 off 70 deliveries in the semifinal against New Zealand.

The 28-year-old emphasized the lessons soaked in from the defeat and his run with the bat leading into the finale while congratulating Australia for reigning champions for the sixth time in One-Day Internationals history.

"We're heartbroken, it still hasn't sunk in and it won't for a while. My first World Cup was an experience that has taught me so much and made me grateful for everything that's come my way," Iyer wrote.

"Thank you to the BCCI, team management, support staff, my teammates and you the fans for backing us from the beginning right up until the end. And congratulations to the entire Australian team on a marvellous campaign," he added.
