Indian fans have finally received a positive update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury. On Tuesday, the ODI vice-captain shared a picture of himself in the gym riding an exercise bike. This small but significant post has raised hopes about his recovery, especially because he has been away from the field for almost a month.

What happened to Shreyas Iyer?

Indian star batter injured his spleen while trying to take a catch during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. As soon as he felt something was wrong, he signaled toward the dugout and was immediately taken to a hospital

Doctors found internal bleeding and performed a minor procedure to control it. After spending a week under observation, he was discharged on November 1 and returned to India on November 16.

Notably, Iyer has become a key part of India’s middle order in ODI format. However, he was left out of the Test squad and has taken a break from red-ball cricket to fix long-standing back issues.

It is important to mention that Iyer’s injury came at a time when he could have been a strong candidate to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. He was promoted to the post of vice-captain after Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as full-time ODI skipper

Meanwhile, Times of India report suggest Iyer will need at least two months to fully recover. Even though he is back in Mumbai, he has not resumed full-scale cricket training yet.

The 30-year-old, who led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win last season, will miss the current edition of the tournament and will also be unavailable for the India vs South Africa ODIs starting November 30.
