After missing out on the Test series against England, Shreyas Iyer marked his comeback to the Indian colours playing the ODI series against Australia. However, playing his first-ever series for the team after the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer sustained a terrible injury to his stomach.

Moreover, in a recent Shreyas Iyer injury update shared on 27th October, the BCCI gave a major update abouy India’s ODI vice-captain.

What injury happened to Shreyas Iyer?

Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury during the final ODI in Sydney while taking a catch running backwards to dismiss Australian batter Alex Carey. On screen, Shreyas appeared to have hurt his left rib cage. Seeing the seriousness of the case, he was rushed to the hospital soon after returning to the dressing room.

According to the BCCI statement, the scans revealed that Iyer has endured a laceration injury to his spleen. While the statement states that he is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well, some reports suggest that he has been admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” stated the BCCI update.

What happens in a spleen laceration?

As stated in the BCCI’s update, Shreyas Iyer’s Injury was a laceration to his spleen. During this nasty blow, the spleen, which is situated under the rib cage on the left side, suffered a rupture when Iyer’s stomach forcefully fell on the ground. Usually, this injury happens during car crashes, sporting events, or fist fights. An enlarged spleen or tenderness when you touch the upper rib, and a couple of other symptoms.

The spleen helps the body fight infection and filter old blood cells from one’s bloodstream. Hence, the internal bleeding caused by a ruptured spleen can be life-threatening and is considered to be emergent immediately. Moreover, due to the severity of the internal bleeding, it could turn fatal.

When will Shreyas Iyer play next?

The next assignment for Iyer, who is being considered only for the ODI format by the national selectors at present, is the three-match series against South Africa in a month, and it remains to be seen if the team's vice-captain will recover totally for the three-game series.

Earlier, Iyer was expected to be out of action for about three weeks and return just before the series, but now it seems the recovery period may now be longer. Considering the impact of the injury, it will not be wrong to say that Shreyas Iyer could be ruled out of India’s next ODI series, which is set to be played during November-December.
