Road to Semis

India

India have by far been the best team in the tournament. They won all nine games in the group stage and qualified for the semi-finals.

The team has looked compact and solid and practically a class above the others. Rohit Sharma and his men will hope they maintain their form and overcome one of India's biggest obstacles in the history of the tournament, New Zealand (every Indian fan remembers the 2019 heartbreak).

Players to watch out: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand

New Zealand came into the tournament with the issue of Kane Williamson's injury hindering them. However, they kicked off their campaign in style, beating the defending champions, England, rather comprehensively. After this, they maintained their form and won the next three games.

At this juncture, they started to lose momentum and faced four consecutive defeats. But with their leader back at the helm, New Zealand won against Sri Lanka and secured their berth for the semis.

Even though it has been a topsy-turvy ride for the Kiwis in this tournament, they will take heart from their history against India in ICC tournaments. Kane Williamson and his men will be eager to take the 'Black Caps' to their third consecutive ODI World Cup final.

Players to watch out: Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Trent Boult.

IND vs NZ, Last Encounter

India and New Zealand last faced off in the World Cup 2023 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala in the 21st match.

In that game, India won the toss and decided to field first. The Indian bowlers started nicely and had the Kiwis struggling at 19 for two in 8.1 overs. But Daryl Mitchell (130 off 127) and Rachind Ravindra (75 off 87) stitched a 159-run partnership and got them in a position of strength.

However, the Indian bowlers made a comeback, and a total which looked like it might go well past 300 was restricted to 273 runs by them. Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he picked up five wickets for 54 runs in his ten overs.

In the chase, Rohit Sharma (46 off 40) and Shubman Gill (26 off 31) got India off to a great start as they stitched 71 runs for the opening wicket in just 11 overs. After the dismissal of the Indian skipper, Virat Kohli (95 off 104) walked in and started guiding India towards the target. He got Shreyas Iyer (33 off 29) and KL Rahul (27 off 35), who aided him in the pursuit.

Even though India lost a couple of quick wickets in the middle, Ravindra Jadeja (39 off 44) played a calm and composed innings to provide the finishing touches. India breached the target with four wickets and two overs to spare.

IND vs NZ,  Semi-final 1: Wankhede Stadium, Pitch Report

The wicket at the Wankhede Stadium has provided something for all the players. It has been perfect for batting in the first innings. Under lights, the wicket has offered help to the pacers, especially for the first 10-15 overs.

The team batting first has dominated 75% of the contests here in this tournament. And the only game in which the team chasing won, we saw one of the greatest knocks in ODI cricket by Glenn Maxwell.

The team winning the toss will likely look to bat first in this game. However, the team chasing will look to play out the first 15 overs. The dew will set in, and the wicket will get easier afterwards. Hence, the chasing team will back themselves to chase down any target once they get past the first 15 overs unscathed.

IND vs NZ, Semi-final 1: Key Players

Rohit Sharma (IND)

  • Rohit Sharma has been the most impactful batter for India in this tournament. The fiery starts he gave his team have put them ahead in most of the games.
  • However, only the current form speaks in his favour to be a good pick for the game. Sharma neither has a good record against New Zealand nor at the Wankhede Stadium in ODIs.

Virat Kohli (IND)

  • Virat Kohli has been in great form in the tournament. With 543 runs in eight innings, he is currently the third-highest run scorer in the competition.
  • The 'Modern Master' averages 56.59 across 30 innings against New Zealand. Also, he enjoys batting at Wankhede; his average of 59.50 at the venue is a testament to itself. So, Kohli will be a must-pick for this game.

Mohammed Shami (IND)

  • Mohammed Shami has taken the stage by fire since he arrived in this tournament. With 16 wickets in just four matches, Shami is looking unstoppable. There is no way one can ignore Shami in this game.

Rachin Ravindra (NZ)

  • This tournament's most significant talking point has been how Rachin Ravindra has carried himself as a batter. He has scored 565 runs in nine innings and is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Ravindra is the one must-pick from the New Zealand side for this game.

Trent Boult (NZ)

  • The Kiwi speedster has not been at his best in the tournament. Thus, he looks like a risky choice. But if New Zealand is bowling second, Boult will be a crucial player for them. Also, given the historic problem of the Indian top-order batters against left-arm pacers, you might be rewarded by keeping him in your fantasy XI.

IND vs NZ, Semi-final 1: Cricket Fantasy Expert Tips

Wait for the tops; go for pacers from the team bowling second. This is the ideal way to go for this game; however, as general advice, a 2-4-2-3 or 1-4-3-3 combination will be suitable.
