Shane Watson is set to discontinue his association with Quetta Gladiators. On Wednesday, January 15, the franchise made the shocking announcement through an explosive social media post. It is worth noting that Watson was appointed as the head coach of the franchise prior to the 2024 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Shane Watson 'unavailable' to continue as coach

Mere months prior to the launch of the PSL 2025 season, the Quetta Gladiators franchise took to X and confirmed that former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson will be “unavailable” to continue as head coach of the team.

Quetta Gladiator’s owner Mr. Nadeem Omar extended his best wishes to Watson for his future endeavors, and expressed his admirations to the legendary cricketer for his contributions towards the franchise, both as a player and as a captain.

Shane Watson played a crucial role in Quetta Gladiators’ title-winning campaign from the 2019 edition of PSL. The former Australian cricketer scored 430 runs throughout the season to bag the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award. He even punched out a match-winning 43-ball 71 in the Qualifier match against Peshawar Zalmi.

The franchise appointed Shane Watson as its head coach ahead of the 2024 edition of the tournament. Under his guidance, the team reached the playoffs for the first time after four failed attempts.

As per recent reports, the Quetta Gladiators might rope in franchise veteran Sarfaraz Ahmed as the new head coach of the team. Ahmed, who was part of the Gladiators team as a player since the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2016, recently went unpicked at the PSL 2025 player’s draft. With the unavailability of Shane Watson, the former Pakistan captain might well make his return to the franchise in a different capacity.
