Highest totals in women’s ODIs [Source: @BCCIWomen/x]
While men’s ODIs have long been celebrated for their high-scoring encounters, women’s ODIs have steadily carved their own space by mounting big totals to showcase the evolution and brilliance of the format. Notably, three of the five biggest ODI team totals were recorded in the space of a week, when hosts New Zealand took a special liking to Irish bowlers back in mid-2018.
Following India’s merry of runs in January 2025, here we take a look at five of the biggest team totals ever recorded in women’s ODI history.
5. New Zealand Women 418 vs Ireland, June 2018
New Zealand hauled 418 runs without facing their 50 overs in the second ODI from their three-match away series against Ireland back in June 2018. Emboldened with a 1-0 lead, opening batter Sophie Devine slapped 108 from just 61 with 13 boundaries and six sixes while Maddy Green at number three clattered a 36-ball half-century.
Swift 40s from captain Amy Satterthwaite, wicketkeeper-batter Bernadine Bezuidenhout and all-rounder Anna Peterson and 32 extras from Irish bowlers further bolstered New Zealand’s cause at The Vineyard in Dublin as the ‘White Ferns’ recorded a huge 306-run win after amassing one of ODI cricket’s biggest totals.
4. India Women 435-5 vs Ireland, January 2025
Mere days after Team India amassed 370 to record their highest team total, the ‘Women in Blue’ one-upped their own effort against the same opponents at Rajkot’s Saurashtra Cricket Stadium in January 2025. Facing Ireland in the third ODI of their three-match series, interim Indian skipper Smriti Mandhana launched 12 boundaries and seven huge sixes in her 80-ball 135. Her younger partner Pratika Rawal also made her presence known by composing 154 runs from 129 balls as the two blistering openers shared 233 runs for the first wicket.
Richa Ghosh at number three smeared 59 from 42 balls against Ireland’s worn-out bowlers as India racked up 435-5 from 50 overs, their highest team total and the fourth highest overall in women’s ODIs at the time.
3. New Zealand Women 440-3 vs Ireland, June 2018
New Zealand batters continued to make merry off Ireland’s battered-and-bruised bowlers, this time leathering the visitors at Dublin’s Castle Avenue in the final ODI of their three-match series from June 2018. Just three days after belting 418 runs at the city’s Vineyard, the ‘White Ferns’ accrued 440-3 from 50 overs. Amelia Kerr, aged 17 at the time, batted out the innings and clobbered 232 of those runs from just 145 balls with 31 boundaries and two sixes.
Leigh Kasperek at number three also reaped in a boundary-laden 113, while opener Amy Satterthwaite made a 45-ball 61 during her century-plus partnership with Kerr. Remarkably, Amelia Kerr also picked up five wickets later in the match to headline New Zealand’s 305-run victory and a 3-0 sweep.
2. New Zealand Women 455-5 vs Pakistan, January 1997
In the second ODI of their two-match series against the visiting Pakistan team at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval in January 1997, the Maia Lewis-led New Zealand team towed 455 runs from 50 overs for the loss of just five wickets. Skipper Lewis herself top-scored in the innings by cracking 105 from just 72 balls, while opener Debbie Hockley and middle-order batters Trudy Anderson and Clare Nicholson also chipped in with quick half-centuries.
The innings marked the first-ever occasion of a team 400 in ODIs, and it remained the highest-ever women’s ODI total for over two decades. Moreover, the 408-run hammering New Zealand inflicted on the visiting Pakistanis actively remains the biggest margin of victory ever recorded in the history of the format.
1. New Zealand Women 491-4 vs Ireland, June 2018
New Zealand Women started off their home ODI series against Ireland in June 2018 by mounting 491-4 after opting to bat first. Captain Suzie Bates made 151 off 94 balls and number three Maddy Green contributed with 122 runs from just 77 deliveries with 15 regal boundaries and a six. Jess Watkin (62 off 59) and Amelia Kerr (81* off 45) and 31 extras also left a lasting impression as the New Zealand team toppled its own 21-year-old record in Women’s ODIs.
The hosts ended up securing a huge 347-run win to signal a long and tiring week for the visitors.
