Shan Masood is set to be axed as captain by Karachi Kings [Source: @Rnawaz31888/x.com]
The winds of change are blowing strong in Karachi Kings and they are not holding back. With PSL 2025 just around the corner, reports suggest a major leadership overhaul is on the cards as both captain Shan Masood and head coach Phil Simmons are likely to be replaced.
Shan Masood’s Captaincy Tenure Nears End
After making the switch from Multan Sultans, Shan Masood was handed the reins last season. But things didn’t quite go according to plan. Karachi Kings finished fifth in PSL 2024 with four wins and six defeats.
Masood’s form with the bat was way off the mark as well: just 158 runs in 10 matches at an average of 15.80. For a guy leading from the front, that’s far from ideal.
Now, with big names like David Warner, Kane Williamson, Litton Das, Tim Seifert, and even Vice floating around in the top-order mix, Masood’s spot in the playing XI itself looks shaky. In a team overloaded with top-order talent, there’s hardly any room for passengers. The writing is on the wall and Shan might just be the first one shown the door.
Phil Simmons To Part Ways With Karachi Kings
Unlike Masood, Phil Simmons seems to be stepping away on his own terms. The seasoned coach, who took over in 2023, has reportedly informed the franchise about his decision to step down. Reason? Prior commitments with the Bangladesh national team, who are also eyeing him for a long-term head coach role.
Simmons has always been a man in demand and this new chapter with Bangladesh might just be too good to pass up. While the Kings would have loved to hold onto his experience, it looks like both sides are parting ways on good terms.
Who Will Be The New Karachi Kings Captain?
The Kings haven’t had much to brag about in recent seasons and this shake-up might just be what the doctor ordered. With the tournament set to begin on April 11, and Karachi Kings taking on Multan Sultans on April 12, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
A new captain, a new coach and possibly a new mindset, the Kings are clearly looking to turn over a new leaf. The big question now is: who takes the wheel?
