In a surprising move, veteran Bangladesh cricketer Shakib-Al-Hasan has made a significant decision to skip both the IPL and PSL 2024, redirecting his focus towards his national team career.

The seasoned all-rounder, who played a crucial role in the Tigers' World Cup 2023 campaign, exited the tournament prematurely due to an injury during the league stage. As he battles his way back to full fitness, Shakib has chosen to forgo the lucrative franchise leagues, expressing his commitment to the Bangladesh side.

"I deliberately refrained from registering for IPL, creating a window to solely focus on national duties. When my manager proposed my name for the PSL draft, I promptly instructed him to withdraw it. My intention is to commit this time to the national team, making a conscious sacrifice of the franchise tournaments I have been a part of."

The decision comes in the wake of a disappointing World Cup performance for Bangladesh in 2023. Despite this setback, the team managed to draw a three-match Test series against New Zealand at home. Shakib, initially hopeful of participating in the ODI and T20 series, received medical advice to continue his rehabilitation, leading to his exclusion from the New Zealand tour.

"I was hoping that I would be going to New Zealand for the ODI and T20I series... But I consulted a doctor two days back, and he asked me to wait as I will need another two weeks and later start the rehabilitation," Shakib explained, shedding light on the challenges of his recovery process.

The all-rounder reassures supporters that he is dedicated to playing for a long time, even though he is uncertain about his future, despite franchise cricket fans being disappointed by his absence from the IPL and PSL. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a feasible avenue for him to resume competitive cricket, as his recuperation has taken longer than anticipated.

"I am playing in three formats, and I hope that I can continue that... I have the desire to play cricket for a long time," Shakib explained.

Bangladesh's captain clarified his absence from the auctions of IPL and PSL, stating that he aims to make himself available for the national team during the packed 2023-24 season.
