Match-Fixing Allegations On Mushfiqur Rahim? Bangladesh Veteran Takes TV Channel To Court

Bangladeshi wicketkeeper-batter, Mushfiqur Rahim has taken a significant legal step against a local television channel, Ekattor TV.

Mushfiqur Rahim sends legal notice to TV channel for false match-fixing report

Rahim's action follows a controversial report by the channel, which suggested a possible link between his unusual dismissal during the second Test against New Zealand and match-fixing. This accusation has sparked a notable backlash from Rahim, leading him to send a legal notice through his attorney, Shihab Uddin Khan.

In the contentious second Test, Rahim faced an unexpected dismissal while batting at 35 runs. He was ruled out for obstructing the field after attempting to stop the ball with his hand, an incident that left spectators and commentators bewildered, especially given the ball's position far from the stumps. This rare and clearly innocuous event gained an unexpected twist when Ekattor TV aired a report implying that Rahim's action might be linked to match-fixing.

The legal notice, which marks a clear and stern response from Rahim, demands several corrective measures from Ekattor TV. These include the removal of the report from all digital platforms and social media, a public apology broadcast, a formal press release containing an apology, and a written assurance that such incidents will not recur.

Rahim, through the press release, expressed his outrage over the allegations, describing them as "false and baseless," and an example of "yellow journalism and the publication of fake news."

His legal team has framed these accusations as constituting criminal defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code, 1860, and cyber-bullying as per Sections 25(1)(Ka), 25(2), and 29 of the Cyber Security Act, 2023. They have also raised the possibility of pursuing exemplary damages through civil legal action.

This legal battle comes in the wake of Bangladesh's loss in the second Test, concluding the series in a 1-1 draw.
