Bangladesh’s veteran cricketer and former Awami League MP Shakib Al Hasan finds himself amidst troubled waters as allegations have surfaced of unpaid debts exceeding Tk. 1 Crore to various crab suppliers at his enterprise, Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm.

Massive crab debt scandal hits Shakib Al Hasan

Established in 2016 in the coastal village of Datinakhali, Satkhira, the venture has seemingly landed in choppy seas following its closure in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zulfikar Ali, a key supplier from Munshiganj, claimed that the business once led by Shakib’s name is now leaving its creditors high and dry.

"We used to collect money at the end of the month along with the crabs. Accounts were managed by the farm's manager. However, I have not been paid for almost three months and I am still owed Tk5-6 lakh,” he lamented.

Zulfikar, along with 13-14 others, collectively owed over Tk. 1 crore, has hit a wall trying to recover the dues.

“After the farm closed in 2021, we tried various ways to recover the money but were unsuccessful. A year ago, I went to Shakib Al Hasan's house in Magura to speak with his father. He mistreated us and kicked us out of the house. I still have the memo as proof of the owed money,” he added.

The crab farm’s financial woes also reportedly led to a tragic turn for Guru Das from Bhamia village, who allegedly “died of frustration” and a stroke after being owed Tk30 lakh by Shakib.

Morali Koyal, a landowner, also voiced concerns over Shakib's business practices, including unauthorized constructions on leased land.

"They illegally constructed a building on our land. This was not mentioned in the contract. Now, no one stays there. Since the farm closed, we haven't seen anyone there,” said Koyal.

According to The Business Standard, Shakib has assured of paying the due money.

"We have faced losses. Orders worth Tk5 crore were cancelled during the pandemic. If we receive loans as government incentives, we will pay the due amounts to the affected landowners," Shakib said.

Meanwhile, as Shakib faces these allegations, the cricket star’s once-sterling reputation risks being tarnished unless swift action is taken to clear the murky waters of this growing financial dispute.
