Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is currently one of the best quicks in the world, is set to become the first player from his country to play in the International League T20 (ILT20). Afridi has received a three-year contract from Desert Vipers for the second season of the ILT20.

Until last year, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not allow its players to participate in the league. Azam Khan had also received a contract from the Vipers last year, but the PCB did not give him a no-objection certificate.

"I am excited to join the Desert Vipers. I know there are many Pakistan cricket fans in the UAE and I hope they will support our team in the upcoming ILT20," Shaheen said in a statement.

He will be sharing the dressing room with other bowlers like Wanindu Hasaranga, Tom Curran, Matheesha Pathirana and Sheldon Cottrell.

Sanctioned by Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), the ILT20 is a T20 tournament played across the UAE. Gulf Giants were the winners last year, while Vipers finished as the runners-up. They were captained by Colin Munro, who has been retained for the next season, which will be played in January next year.

Afridi, meanwhile, is currently one of the most lethal bowlers in the world. Since making his international debut in 2018, the pacer has already picked more than 110 wickets across formats. In the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he has picked up 71 wickets in 51 matches. Afridi is currently in England, playing in The Hundred tournament.
