'Chaplusi Nahi Karega' Ex-WC Winner Predicts Gautam Gambhir's Early Exit As Head Coach

In a candid and honest interview, former Indian T20 World Cup-winning bowler Joginder Sharma opined that Gautam Gambhir might not retain his head coach role until 2027 as the odds of potential ego clashes with players or board members are high. 

Following Rahul Dravid’s exit as the Indian head coach after the T20 World Cup victory, Gautam Gambhir was appointed his replacement owing to his recent success as KKR mentor.

Gambhir was rewarded with a five-year control extending until 2027. While his tenure began with a T20 series sweep against Sri Lanka, former Indian cricketer, who was a part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup winning squad, Joginder Sharma predicted Gambhir would lose his job prior to 2027.

In an interview with journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Joginder Sharma opined that Gautam Gambhir won’t stay as India’s head coach for a long time due to his honest and fearless personality. 

"Gautam Gambhir team ko sambhalne waala hai lekin par mera ye manna hai ki Gautam Gambhir jyada lambe samay tak tik nahi payega," Joginder Sharma said.

He added that Gambhir has a certain way of making decisions and enforcing them on his players, and that attitude might not sit well with certain players, including Virat Kohli, thus resulting in an ego clash.

"Kyunki Gautam Gambhir ke apne hi kuch faisle hote hain. Ho sakta hai kisi player se man motaaw ho jaye. Mai Virat Kohli ki baat nahi kar raha hun. Gautam Gambhir ke faisle kai baar aise ho jaate hain ki dusro ko pasand nahi aate."

Joginder Sharma also opined that Gautam Gambhir does not seek credit or flattery of any sort, nor would he lick anyone’s boots to stay at his job.

"Gautam Gambhir seedhi baat karne waala hai. Wo kisi ke paas jaane waala nahi hai. Gautam Gambhir chaplusi karne waala banda nahi hai. Usko credit dene waale hum log hain. Wo apna kaam karta hai, sacche dil se karta hai, badi imaandaari se karta hai," he added.

Notably, Gambhir mentored LSG for two seasons and led KKR to a title victory in his very first season as a mentor.
