Sanju Samson's selection in the Indian team has always been a matter of intense debates. The right-handed batter from Kerala has more often that not found himself on the wrong side of the line when it comes to his selection in the Indian team, and it seems that the story will continue in the ODI series against South Africa as well.

On the eve of the first ODI between India and South Africa at the Wanderers, KL Rahul, the Indian skipper for the series was asked whether Sanju Samson will play in the first ODI or not. KL Rahul on his part did well to keep the suspense going, but dropped a hint as well, which signals that Sanju Samson might miss the cut again.

KL Rahul said that Sanju Samson will bat in the middle order and will perform the same role he has done before for India in the ODI format. He added that Sanju will bat at number 5 or 6. However, Sanju Samson being a wicketkeeper batter will have to warm benches as KL Rahul made it clear that he will keep wickets and bat in the middle order as well. He also stated that if the opportunity comes, Sanju will keep wickets as well.

"Sanju will bat in the middle order, that's the role he has always played in ODI cricket. He will bat at either 5 or 6. For now, I am going to keep the wickets in the series, but if there's an opportunity for Sanju to keep, he will do so at some point."

So, going by what KL Rahul said, it seems that management is looking at Sanju Samson as a backup wicketkeeper but there is still a slim possibility of Sanju Samson playing as a pure batter in the first ODI given how well he has performed in ODI format in the limited opportunities he has got.
