The India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced a few days ago, and while the core of the team was retained, the inclusion of Shubman Gill created a major problem for the team. The Gujarat Titans, and India Test captain is likely to bat at the opening spot in the Asia Cup, and that means, one of Sanju Samson, or Abhishek Sharma might have to sacrifice their position.

The pair of Samson and Abhishek had done well in the last year as India's opening pair, but India might have to change their opening combination, especially with Gill opening. Samson is a key player in the team, and will be the first-choice keeper, and the Kerala batter dropped a major hint recently on his T20I batting spot.

Samson to bat in middle order in Asia Cup?

In the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) match on Thursday, Samson dropped a major hint about his willingness to adapt and change his batting spot. He was expected to open the innings for his team, Kochi Blue Tigers, but he decided to bat at number 5. Although he did not get a chance to bat, but the Kerala batter gave a subtle hint on where he could bat in Asia Cup.

All slots filled, only number 5 left in India team

Abhishek and Gill are likely to open for the team, and the number 3 spot is expected to be occupied by Tilak Varma. Captain Suryakumar Yadav will bat at number 4, and with Hardik Pandya likely to play at 6, the only spot left for Samson to play is the number 5 position, and this is where he could slot in for the Asia Cup.

Interestingly, his preferred batting position is the opening, or the number 3 spot, but he might not get a chance to play at his favoured slot.
