In the latest development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the post of national selectors for men's, women's, and junior committees. Chief selector of the men's national team, Ajit Agarkar's tenure was extended till the T20 World Cup in February, and the BCCI wants the next selector ready before his tenure expires.
Men's National selector - the eligibility criteria
As per the BCCI, the member of the senior men's selection committee is responsible for selecting players for different formats - Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Eligibility criteria
- Minimum of 7 Test Matches; OR 30 First-Class Matches; OR 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class Matches.
- Must have retired from the game at least 5 years prior.
- Must not have been a member of any Cricket Committee of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 5 years.
Women's National selector - eligibility criteria
The member of the senior Women's selection committee is responsible for selecting the Women's team for different formats - Tests, T20Is, and ODI cricket.
Eligibility criteria
- Former players who have represented the Indian Women’s National Team.
- Must have retired from the game at least 5 years prior.
- Must not have been a member of any Cricket Committee of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 5 years.
How has Agarkar's tenure been as chief selector?
In July 2023, Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the chief selector of the Men's National Cricket team, and under his helm, the Indian team has an impressive CV. They won the Asia Cup in 2023, and the team selected by his panel reached the finals of the World Cup in 2023.
Moreover, in 2024, the Rohit Sharma-led side won the T20 World Cup, and finally the team conquered the Champions Trophy this year. Performances in Tests have been poor, but the team has done well in white-ball cricket.
