Karun Nair’s return to competitive cricket has hit another roadblock. The Mysore Warriors star has been denied fitness clearance by the BCCI Centre of Excellence and will miss participating in the the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy 2025.
BCCI Blocks Karun Nair's Return To Maharaja Trophy
The 33-year-old copped a nasty blow during the fifth Test against England at The Oval earlier this year. A rising delivery left him with a finger fracture, one that has taken longer than expected to heal.
While the Mysore Warriors named him in their squad, the clearance never came. Nair travelled to Mysore for the start of the tournament but soon returned to Bengaluru to continue rehab under the watch of the Centre of Excellence. He is expected to return to competitive cricket once the medical team gives him the nod.
It is worth mentioning that the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy won’t feel the same without Karun Nair. He has been the tournament’s batting talisman, dominating run charts in back-to-back seasons.
In 2023, he piled up 532 runs before going one better in 2024 with 560 runs, including the highest individual score in the competition’s short history. He also led Mysore Warriors to the title last year. His absence now leaves a big hole in their campaign.
Tough Timing For Karun Nair
The timing of this setback couldn’t have been more cruel. Nair only just made his way back into the Indian Test side after seven long years. His comeback tour of England wasn’t headline-grabbing, but he fought hard for his 205 runs in eight innings, including a gritty half-century at The Oval.
Those runs might not have silenced every critic, but they showed he still has the appetite for the grind. With India’s Test calendar packed with big home series against West Indies and South Africa later this year, he would have been hoping to stay in the selectors’ line of sight.
Blow For Central Zone In Duleep Trophy
It’s not just Mysore Warriors missing his presence. Central Zone will also feel the pinch in the Duleep Trophy, where Nair was expected to play a key role in the middle order. His ability to play long innings in red-ball cricket made him one of the most important names in the squad. For now, though, he remains under BCCI medical supervision with no return date marked on the calendar.
For Nair, the road back is once again about patience. He is no stranger to setbacks, but this one comes when he was just starting to stitch together his comeback story. Fans in Karnataka and across India will hope to see him back sooner rather than later.
