It's been a week since the India Women’s team lifted their maiden World Cup, and the celebration is still going on across the nation. From BCCI rewards to state honors, these heroes have won hearts, even of those who never followed women’s cricket.

As the golden daughters of India are having the best time after their historic achievement, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar came up with some valuable advices. Amid nationwide celebrations, he cautioned the team not to expect every promise made in the wake of their victory.

Gavaskar issues stern warning to India Women’s team

Ending years of waiting, rising of some deadly heartbreaks, India Women finally broke the jinx and lifted the coveted Women’s World Cup Trophy with domination. Dominating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final, they turned billions of dreams into reality. Since then, the country can’t stop hailing the majestic victory as players are getting individual rewards from their states.

Not just states, even major brands are rushing to back women’s cricket, raising questions about their sincerity. Reflecting on this, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar warned the women in Blue. In his column for Mid-day, he urged them not to expect every promise made after their World Cup triumph to come true.

“Just a word of caution to the girls. Please don't get disappointed if some of the promised awards don’t come to you. In India, advertisers, brands, and individuals are quick to jump on the bandwagon and try and get free publicity for themselves on the shoulders of the winners. Have a look at the full-page advertising and hoardings congratulating the team. Unless they are team and individual players’ sponsors, the rest are only trying to promote their brands or themselves and giving nothing to the ones who have brought glory to Indian cricket,” he wrote.

The Little Master reflects on his 1983 World Cup experience

In the history of Indian cricket, the 1983 World Cup win will be a forever spectacle as India won the World Cup for the first time. While cautioning the India Women after their recent win, Sunil Gavaskar recalled that era, reflecting on how many promises made in the aftermath of victory often fade with time.

“The 1983 team also were made many promises with loads of coverage in the media then. Almost all never materialised. The media can’t be blamed as they were happy to carry the lofty announcements, not realising that they also were being used by these shameless people. So girls, don’t fret if these shameless ones are using your win to promote themselves,” he added.

Over the night, the victory drew an unreal spotlight over women’s cricket in India. Reflecting on it, Sunil Gavaskar said the team’s greatest reward was the unconditional love and admiration they won from Indian fans.
