It would not be wrong to say that the speculation around Sanju Samson’s IPL future has intensified as the 2026 IPL mini-auction approaches. Rajasthan Royals’ captain has once again become the centre of attention with the question in everyone's mind whether he will stay with the Rajasthan-based franchise for IPL 2026.

The trade buzz began after reports claimed that Samson had approached the Royals’ management after the 2025 season. The Kerala batter requested either trade or release. After several rumours began, CSK emerged as the new team for him.

CSK move for Sanju Samson appears off

However, in a recent report by Money Control states that there are no active discussions between Samson and Chennai, and the Royals are still considering retaining their star player.

It is important to mention that Sanju Samson’s current contract runs until 2027, giving the franchise the right to retain him without needing his approval. Despite this, multiple reports have pointed out that the relationship between the player and the management has been tense in recent months. Sanju's IPL 2025 was marred by injury and he could not play the entire season. The India star played only 9 matches and made 285 runs at an average of 35.62 and strike-rate of 140.39.

If retained, Will Samson continue as RR's captain?

The report also stated that if Samson is retained, his captaincy is no longer guaranteed. Riyan Parag, who filled in as captain after Samson was injured last season, could be considered as a potential replacement. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal could be in the running for the leadership role as well.

Ultimately, all decisions regarding Samson’s future in Rajasthan-whether retention, captaincy, or potential trade will be made by RR principal owner Manoj Badale (according the same report by Money Control).

For now, the trade buzz with CSK appears to have lost momentum. Fans will have to wait for the franchise's announcement to know whether Samson will continue leading the Royals or make way for a new captain.
