India’s star batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to be sidelined for at least two months after suffering a laceration to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The injury occurred when Iyer dived backwards to complete a brilliant catch of Alex Carey, landing awkwardly and injuring his lower rib cage area.
Iyer after the injury according to reports was briefly fainted inside the Indian dressing room. He was then immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU.
According to recent reports by RevSportz, doctors performed an interventional trans-catheter embolisation procedure to stop internal bleeding. This procedure includes a medical intervention where a small catheter is used to block the bleeding artery. It is also important to note that Iyer is currently under the observation of a team of specialists in Sydney, and the BCCI medical staff is taking a close look at his progress.
Earlier reports also confirmed that the board is making special arrangements for Iyer’s sister to travel to Sydney to be by his side during recovery.
Shreyas Iyer likely to be out for two months due to injury
The same reports suggest that Iyer’s recovery period is expected to last around eight weeks, which means he will likely miss the upcoming ODI series against South Africa in November-December.
His participation in the home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026 also remains uncertain, with the BCCI selection committee unlikely to rush his return ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
It will not be wrong to say that Iyer is one of India’s key performers over the past year in the ODI format. His absence will come as a major blow to the team’s preparations for the upcoming South Africa series. In 2025, Iyer has played 11 ODI matches for India in which he has made 496 runs at an average of 49.60 and strike-rate of 89.53. So, it will be interesting to see which player the BCCI selection committee picks as Iyer's replacement.
