Sanju Samson in IPL 2025 (Source:AFP)
The buzz for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has already started, and over the time, each team has made its own identity with clinical performance, loyalty, star power and strong fan base.
For Rajasthan Royals (RR), this identity has been around one person - Sanju Samson. Now, with several reports suggesting that RR might release or trade Samson before IPL 2026, the next question is: If this really happens, what would it mean for the Rajasthan Royals?
Loss of leadership and huge blow to batting strength
It would not be wrong to say that the Kerala batter has been the backbone of RR’s leadership since 2021. He has been leading the side with calmness and composure for several years now. However, results might not always have gone their way, but his captaincy has stood out.
In IPL 2025, Sanju was injured for half the season, and Riyan Parag was made captain in his absence. And the fact that cannot be denied is that he lacks the experience and maturity.
Now, if Sanju leaves, RR does not have a clear, experienced captaincy option for IPL 2026. They would either have to back Parag, which they have done since his debut or hope to buy a big player in the mini-auction. But the next question will be "Is this possible?".
This is just a mini-auction, and there is a chance other franchises will not release their star players until and unless some surprising trade deal gets executed.
The second point that RR should think about before releasing Sanju is that he's not just a captain; he’s one of RR’s most consistent batters. With more than 4000 runs in 149 matches for the franchise, he has been a dependable player and match-winner on multiple occasions.
In a team that has often struggled with batting consistency, Sanju provided stability and the ability to change games single-handedly.
Loss of brand value and fan Connect
Another striking point that we should not forget is - 'Sanju Samson is the face of the Rajasthan Royals'. He has been with the team since 2013, and fans have emotionally connected to him over time.
His departure can also impact the franchise's brand value. Sponsors, advertisers, and most importantly, fans, may lose interest. If RR parts ways with their most recognisable player, they risk losing a loyal fan base.
A risk RR Can’t afford?
The reports around a rift between Sanju Samson and RR management are still unconfirmed. But if the franchise does go ahead and release or trade him, the consequences could be big -No experienced leader in the team, weakening of the batting core and loss of star power and brand connection.
