In a rare event, the second Test between India and South Africa will witness the tea break being taken before the lunch. Usually, the lunch break is taken first, and the tea break follows it after the second session's play. However, the second Test between India and South Africa will witness an exactly opposite event due to some valid reasons.
Tea break to be taken first; lunch break to be postponed in IND vs SA 2nd Test
Test matches in India generally begin at 9.30 am local time. However, due to the early sunrise as well as sunset in the eastern state of Assam, the second Test between India and South Africa at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati will kick off thirty minutes prior to the customary start time, i.e. at 9.00 am IST.
This move, aimed at ensuring the completion of 90 overs in a day's play, is also the reason for the tea break preceding the lunch break. According to a report by Express Sports, the organisers have decided to take a 20-minute tea break at 11 am, which will ensure they get extra game time on the field.
“The reason to have early tea is because Guwahati witnesses early sunset and there is early start too. This will be the first time we have decided to change the Tea session as time will be saved to get extra game time on the field,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Express Sports.
IND vs SA 2nd Test revised session timings
- 9 am to 11 am - 1st session
- 11am to 11.20 am - Tea break
- 11.20 am to 1.20 pm - 2nd session
- 1.20 pm to 2 pm - lunch break
- 2pm to 4 pm - 3rd session
Thus, by taking the tea break first, the organisers aim to shorten the first interval to counter the early sunset at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. It's a precautionary measure that will help both teams complete a major chunk of overs before bad light spoils the game at the venue.
