In a significant development, Indian star openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are reportedly not going to be named in Mumbai’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Alongside them, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube are also set to be omitted.

Not named, not ruled out; Rohit and Jaiswal could still play Vijay Hazare Trophy

Mumbai are set to begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2024-25 campaign from December 24, with the team placed in Elite Group C. All their group-stage matches will be played in Jaipur, and the side will be led by experienced all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

However, according to a report from The Times of India, several high-profile Indian international stars will not be named in the squad. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, two of India’s premier openers, are notably absent, along with India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube.

While their omission raises questions, the Mumbai's selection committee has clarified that Indian international players will be adjusted into the squad once they are available. This means that not being named in the squad does not necessarily rule them out of featuring in the tournament.

In Jaiswal’s case, fitness remains a key factor. The young opener, who recently scored a century for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, was hospitalised after being diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis. He has since been discharged, and his availability will be assessed closer to the start of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on December 24.

The same applies to other Indian internationals, who can join the squad whenever available. Notably, BCCI has urged all Indian players to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy,  India’s premier 50-over tournament, ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11 in Vadodara.

With Virat Kohli already named in Delhi’s probable squad earlier this month, there is optimism that stars like Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal could still turn out for Mumbai once they are available, adding further strength to their VHT campaign.
