Several of India’s Champions Trophy 2025 bound players, including captain Rohit Sharma and fellow senior man Ravindra Jadeja among others, had a crack in certain Ranji Trophy fixtures as the tournament made its return in January after a brief white-ball induced hiatus. Here we take a look at how they fared in their respective Ranji Trophy outings.
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal fail to rescue Mumbai
Indian captain Rohit Sharma, and his Test opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, both failed to get going for Mumbai in each innings of their Elite Group A match against Jammu and Kashmir at the BKC Stadium. After Sharma and Jaiswal scored just three and four runs respectively on Day 1 of the match, the two cricketers punched out just 28 and 26 from their ends in the second innings.
It is worth noting that Sharma also had an underwhelming outing in Australia during India’s disastrous 1-3 result ‘Down Under’.
Shreyas Iyer manages just 28 runs across both innings
Shreyas Iyer, another Indian international playing for Mumbai, scored just 11 and 17 runs across both innings of his team’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Jammu and Kashmir. The middle-order batter is slated to represent India at the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy and his dwindling batting form continues to remain an area of concern for the ‘Men in Blue’ management. Iyer’s failure, coupled with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s lacklustre returns compounded in Mumbai’s five-wicket defeat at home.
Ravindra Jadeja celebrates Ranji Trophy return, but at the expense of Pant
Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant had contrasting outings on their respective Ranji Trophy returns for their teams, Saurashtra and Delhi respectively. While Jadeja picked up 12 wickets in the match, including seven wickets at an expense of just 38 runs in the second Delhi innings, the legendary Indian all-rounder even dismissed Pant in each innings of their two-day affair in Rajkot.
Jadeja was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for a match haul of 12-104, while Rishabh Pant scored just 18 runs across both innings combined as Delhi fell to a huge 10-wicket defeat.
