On June 29, 2025, India’s cricket fans celebrated a very special day, the first anniversary of India’s T20 World Cup victory in Barbados. Led by captain Rohit Sharma, the Indian team won the tournament without losing a single match. They defeated South Africa by just seven runs in the final at Bridgetown, ending an 11-year wait for a major ICC trophy. This was only India’s second T20 World Cup title ever.
The final match was full of excitement and tension. South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls with two strong batsmen, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, still at the crease. The match was tight, and both teams were hungry to end their long wait for a World Cup trophy, India hadn’t won an ICC trophy since 2013, and South Africa since 1998.
Despite the pressure, India held their nerve and managed to win by a narrow margin. The victory was celebrated across the country, with fans, players, and former legends joining in the joy.
Rohit Sharma’s Emotional Moment
Rohit Sharma, the captain, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram on the anniversary, simply captioned, “On This Day 🏆🇮🇳💙”.

The post included a video reel showing the emotional journey, from Rohit’s tears of joy, moments with his family, celebrations with teammates like Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya, to the victory parade that followed.
The Night Before the Final
Rohit opened up about his feelings before the final match in an interview with Star Sports. He said he couldn’t sleep at all the night before the big game, with only the thought of winning the World Cup on his mind.
"13 years is a lot of time. People don't have a career of 13 years. So, to wait for that long to win the World Cup, the last World Cup that I won was in 2007. For me, it couldn't have gotten any bigger than that, in my mind," said Sharma.
He described how he stood by his room window that morning, watching the cricket ground, feeling nervous but hopeful.
"I can see the ground in front of my room. Then I was just watching that. I'm like, okay, in the next two hours, I'll be there. I don't know what is going to happen after four hours. After four hours, the result must have come. Either the cup will be here or there," he concluded.
This win was very personal for Rohit Sharma. He had missed the 2011 World Cup squad, which India won, and since 2013, India had lost eight important knockout matches with Rohit playing. So finally lifting this trophy was very emotional and special.
After the World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20 Internationals. Recently, both also retired from Test cricket. Now, the famous duo only plays One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India.
