In a significant development during the ongoing 1st Test between West Indies and Australia, WI head coach Daren Sammy has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for openly criticising third umpire Adrian Holdstock during the Test at Kensington Oval, Barbados. His comments came after a series of controversial decisions on Day 2 of the match that ultimately contributed to West Indies’ 159-run defeat.

According to an official ICC statement, Sammy was found guilty of breaching Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

"Public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official or team participating in any International Match, irrespective of when such criticism or inappropriate comment is made."

As a consequence, the former West Indies captain has been fined 15% of his match fee, and one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. This is Sammy’s first offence in a 24-month period, meaning the consequences are currently limited to a fine and one demerit point.

The infraction falls under a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. Such violations carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of the match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Outburst Triggered By Controversial Calls

Sammy’s outburst followed a series of poor third-umpire decisions, particularly involving West Indies batters Shai Hope and Roston Chase, both of whom were dismissed in what many described as highly debatable circumstances. These incidents occurred on Day 2, when the match was still delicately poised.

Unhappy with the decision, Sammy voiced his concerns during a media interaction after the day’s play, demanding greater consistency from the third umpire. He also held discussions with Srinath, seeking clarity and fairness in decision-making processes involving the television umpire.

It is important to mention that the charge was brought forward by the on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.

Despite a spirited fight from the hosts, Australia clinched a commanding 159-run victory on Day 3, powered by a stellar five-wicket haul from Josh Hazlewood in the final innings. The win gave Pat Cummins’ side a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
