Prithvi Shaw and Rohit Sharma [Source: @Retired_Fan69/x.com]
There was a time when Prithvi Shaw was being hailed as the next big thing in Indian cricket. A teenage prodigy with a bat in hand and fire in his belly but somewhere along the line, that bright spark started to flicker.
And now, at just 25, the Mumbai opener finds himself in no man’s land, out of the Indian squad for nearly four years, ignored at the IPL auction and battling fitness issues. But Shaw isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. He has picked up the pieces and is slowly trying to stitch things back together.
Prithvi Shaw Opens Up On Candid Chat With Rohit Sharma
After being left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad last season due to poor fitness, Prithvi Shaw was told to report to the MCA trainers and lose a few kilos. For a player once touted as the “next Sehwag,” that must have stung. But to his credit, he turned up and did the work.
He wasn’t picked for the Vijay Hazare Trophy and didn’t take that snub lightly either. He voiced his frustration on social media but also promised his fans he would bounce back stronger. That fire, it seems, hasn’t died.
In a recent revelation, Shaw opened up about meeting India skipper Rohit Sharma during the domestic season. And what he got was some hard-hitting advice.
"I met Rohit Sharma during Domestics, he advised me how to make a solid comeback," said Shaw as quoted by Vaibhav Bhola on News 24 Sports.
It’s the kind of backing a struggling player dreams of. And when advice comes from someone who has been there, done that, it hits differently.
Runs Have Been Dry But Hope Isn’t
Shaw did return for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and even though he didn’t set the tournament on fire with 197 runs from nine games at a strike rate of 156.34, he was part of Mumbai’s title-winning campaign under Shreyas Iyer.
In the Mumbai T20 League, Shaw led the North Mumbai Panthers and scored 137 runs from five games. A knock of 74 off 52 balls against Eagle Thane Strikers reminded fans of the old Shaw: confident, aggressive, and fearless. But those flashes have been few and far between.
IPL Rejection And A New Chapter
Prithvi Shaw had a base price of ₹75 lakh but not a single franchise raised the paddle for him at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Even during the season, when teams were battling injury woes, his phone didn’t ring.
Meanwhile, desperate to find game time and turn the tide, Shaw recently wrote to the Mumbai Cricket Association seeking a No Objection Certificate (NOC). That is a clear signal he wants to move. Perhaps to a team that can give him the platform he needs to reignite his stalled career. It is a bold move. But when your back’s against the wall, sometimes bold is all you have got left.
