Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan’s national white-ball captain on October 2. The modern-day batting legend made the big announcement by taking to X, where he claimed that he wants to prioritize his own individual performance amidst his dwindling form in international cricket.
It is worth noting that this is the second instance of Babar Azam stepping down as Pakistan captain in the space of a year, considering he also quit leadership after the ‘Men in Green’ crashed to a first-round exit at the 2023 World Cup in India. His latest decision came on the heels of Pakistan’s underwhelming performance at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, where twin defeats to USA and India led to yet another early exit from them.
Shortly after Babar Azam stepped down as captain, a legion of cricket fans trolled the Pakistani batter for his repeated resignations. Moreover, some fans even berated Babar for retaking the high-profile job in the first place, and accused him as the primary reason behind Shaheen Afridi’s sacking as national white-ball captain.
Fans troll Babar Azam for repeated resignations
Cricket fans took to X and brutally trolled Babar Azam for his decision of stepping down as Pakistan captain for the second time in less than a year. While some fans mocked Babar’s trophy-less collection as national skipper, others alleged that the modern-day batting legend might well accept Pakistan captaincy once again.
Here is a look at some of the fans expressing their reactions over Babar Azam’s latest announcement:
Babar Azam originally stepped down as Pakistan’s all-format captain after the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup. In turn, the PCB announced Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi as Pakistan’s new Test and white-ball captains respectively.
However, Shaheen was sacked by the cricket board after one series defeat in New Zealand, which prompted them to go back to Babar ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
While Pakistan suffered a similar first-round exit at the T20 event in the West Indies and USA, Babar’s dwindling batting form took another hit as he spent the entire tournament without scoring a fifty. As of now, it has been more than a year since he registered his last century in international cricket for the ‘Men in Green’, regardless of the format.
