On Sunday, December 22, Pakistan stunned South Africa after they handed a 36-run defeat to the hosts in the 3rd ODI to whitewash the series 3-0. The Mohammad Rizwan-led side are in stellar form in ODIs as they also registered a series win against Australia before the South Africa and Zimbabwe tour.
With the win, Pakistan skipper Rizwan has entered an elite list as he joins Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Mahela Jayawardene on the list of Asian captains to whitewash SENA teams in SENA countries. He has become just the fourth captain to do so. Here is the complete list.
- M Jayawardene (v ENG, 2006 ODIs)
- MS Dhoni (v AUS, 2016 T20Is)
- Virat Kohli (v NZ, 2020 T20Is)
- Mohd Rizwan (v SA, 2024 ODIs)
Rizwan Enjoys A Great Start As Pakistan Captain
Notably, Rizwan took on leadership duties in white-ball cricket after Babar Azam announced his resignation. His first tenure was against Australia. Rizwan's tenure as Pakistan skipper started on a bat note as he was defeated in his first ODI, but bounced back to guide Men in Green to win two matches and seal the ODIs 2-1.
Pakistan was defeated in T20Is, but then sealed a whitewash in South Africa ODIs but lost the T20Is. Talking about the fifty-over format, Rizwan has led Pakistan since becoming full-time captain six times and has won five matches.
Pakistan's next assignment would be a Two-match Test series against South Africa, but Shan Masood will lead the side. Nonetheless, Rizwan's leadership has impressed the critics and they are confident of Pakistan's chances going into the Champions Trophy 2025.
