Former Pakistan captain and batting legend Babar Azam missed the opening day of team’s fitness camp at the Kakul Academy in Abbottabad.

Earlier this week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced a list of 29 cricketers for the two-week training camp, which even included reverse-retirees Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim.

As it turned out, Amir turned out to be another notable absentee from the camp alongside regular Pakistan internationals Naseem Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed.

A total of 25 players took part in the first session of the fitness camp on March 26, where they were also examined by the Pakistan medical team.

As per sources, senior players Babar Azam, Iftikhar Ahmed and young fast bowler Naseem Shah will be joining the camp the following day on March 27 after returning from Saudi Arabia.

Mohammad Amir will also join the encampment alongside the trio, considering the seasoned speedster arrived at the academy later on the opening day.

One of the primary agendas of the fitness camp is to enhance the player’s aptness ahead of a hectic T20 season.

While the two-week camp will conclude on April 8, the Pakistan cricket team is slated to host New Zealand in a five-match T20I series roughly a week later in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

The series itself serves as a prelude and a testing ground for the Pakistan team ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.
