The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the panel of match officials for the highly anticipated final of the T20 World Cup 2024, set to be a thrilling clash between South Africa and India at Barbados.

ICC announces umpires for India vs South Africa T20 final

The on-field duties will be entrusted to Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth, with Richard Kettleborough serving as the TV umpire and Richie Richardson taking on the role of match referee.

In a turn of events that has Indian fans breathing a sigh of relief, Richard Kettleborough will not be officiating on the field for this crucial match.

Kettleborough, part of the ICC's Elite panel, has been a familiar face in India's recent knockout stage matches, including their heartbreaking loss in the World Cup 2023 final.

His presence has coincided with six of India's ICC tournament knockout matches, all of which have ended in defeat for the Men in Blue.

This has led to a perception among fans that Kettleborough is a harbinger of bad luck for the Indian team, making his absence from the on-field duties a welcome piece of news.

Coming to both sides, India has been in formidable form throughout the tournament, dropping points only due to a rain-abandoned fixture against Canada in Lauderhill.

Dominant performances against Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Australia ensured their place in the knockout stages as the winners of Group 1 in the Super Eight.

Their momentum continued with a stunning 68-run victory over defending champions England in the semi-final, securing their spot in the final.

On the other hand, South Africa has a perfect record in the tournament. Despite being pushed to the brink by teams like the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Nepal during the group stages, and co-hosts USA at the start of the Super Eights, they have managed to stay undefeated.

Narrow wins against England and the West Indies in the Super Eight stage highlighted their resilience. At the same time, a decisive nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the semi-final showcased their brilliance.

With India looking to break their jinx in ICC finals and South Africa aiming to clinch their first ICC title, the stage is set for a battle of heavyweights.
