Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine is set to return to competitive cricket for his state team Tasmania in the upcoming season of the Sheffield Shield this summer.

As per reports in the Australian, the 37-year-old wicketkeeper is currently training with his state squad, and he could be in line to feature in their season opener against Queensland on October 06.

Paine does not have a contract with the state, but, according to Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dom Baker, if he can prove his worth again, then he will be integrated into the team.

Here's what Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dom Baker said:

“He started here as just a 16-year-old all those years ago and has been a part of our cricket ever since. He is training as an uncontracted player to get fit for club cricket, but if he proves to be anywhere near his best expect to see him playing state cricket again''

With Australia losing their 2nd home series to India under his tenure, the Tasmania-born cricketer came under immense scrutiny for his poor on-field tactics, needless sledging and missed opportunities behind the stumps.

However, he was set to lead Australia in the home Ashes last summer but the sexting scandal proceeded to rear its head at the worst possible time, forcing him to resign in disgrace.

Paine took a break from the game but did not retire, leaving the door open for a comeback.
